Port of LB Invites Public Comment On Its Clean Air Action Plan Tonight July 12 @ LB City Hall With Add'l Meeting July 19 @ Chavez Park

(July 12, 2006) -- The Port of LB's Community Affairs/Gov't Relations Director Carl Kemp has told the City Council that it welcomes public input tonight, July 12, at 7 p.m. on the draft Clean Air Action Plan jointly released by the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles.

We post the pertinent portion of Mr. Kemp's statement delivered at the Council's July 11 meeting:

I'm here tonight to let you all know about a few public hearings that we're having for our San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan...It's a landmark plan with the City of Los Angeles, the Ports of Los Angeles [and Long Beach] and in partnership with EPA, the CA Air Resources Board and the South Coast Air Quality Management District.

Over the next five years, the Ports along with other agencies and industry will invest approximately $2.6 billion dollars in clean air initiatives. The Port of Long Beach alone will invest $181 million dollars in this plan, in addition to the $200 million that we plan to invest for cold ironing, the $100 million that we have set aside for the Green Port policy and other investments that we make as part of our sustainability program.

Included in the plan is modernization of cargo container handling equipment, trucks, boats, railroads and ocean-going vessels.

I'd just like to say on behalf of the [Harbor] Commission, our Executive Director Richard Steinke and our staff are totally committed to the Green Port policy...

We have an unprecedented schedule for this. We're serious about getting it done fast. We can't wait to get the air clean. We need to get it going quickly.

And so we have an aggressive schedule, an ambitious plan, we have four hearings that are community-friendly hearings [full list below]. [On Wednesday July 12] we'll be here in City Hall at 7 p.m...On July 19 we'll be at Cesar Chavez Park, also at 7 p.m...

And these events are again, in the evening, and we encourage you all to come out. We hope to see you there.

Following the 30-day period for public review and input. and possible staff revisions to the Plan (as appropriate), the Boards of Harbor Commissioners at both ports will vote on whether to adopt the Clean Air Action Plan and its proposed lease requirements, tariff changes and incentives.
