(July 15, 2020, 4:30 a.m.) -- During a July 14 city webcast briefing, LB's Director of Health and Human Services, Kelly Colopy, indicated that in recemt days, the "positivity rate" (percentage of persons tested for COVID-19 who test positive for the virus) has climbed to 15.1%. (Ms Colopy indicated the positivity rate was 15.2% a day earlier.).
The increased positivity rate indicatges the virus is now circulating in higher numbers, making it easier to become infected. The City has urged residents continue to take precautions (physical distancing, facial coverings) to avoid becoming infected. LB's positivity rate was roughly 6% when California, LA County and LB began phased "re-openings" in late May (that coincided with mass demonstrations against police-officer involved deaths (following the Minneapolis PD-involved death (now being prosecuted as murder) of George Floyd.) LB's positivity rate then climed to roughly 8% and 10% in succeeding weeks. At the July 14 news briefing, Mayor Garcia also announced that the City's twice-weekly briefings (that he conducts) would resume in the coing week on Mondays and Thursdays. On July 6, the City announced that the news briefings were cancelled and would occur only when there was something newsworthy to report. |
