(July 17, 2020, updated 1:55 p.m.) -- LB's elected policy-setting Board of Education will discuss reopening plans in a special meeting scheduled for on Monday morning July 20.
The Special Meeting is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to noon and will be a virtual teleconference meeting online live. (LBUSD's HQ is closed.) To view the procedures for the meeting, click Board of Education Teleconference Notice LBUSD routinely holds morning/midday meetings during the year; it calls them "workshops"; they're basically briefings by staff for LBUSD boardmembers (and the public)...but they are legally agendized LBUSD board meetings (just not the "prime time" evening Boad meetings.) 10:15 a.m. OPENING OF SCHOOL UPDATE
At 11:00 a.m., the Board is scheduled to take a break until 11:15 a.m. when the Board reconvenes to discuss the "Budget Engagement Process": "Staff will provide a budget update and provide a framework for gathering community input on budget priorities." As of dawn July 17, there are no written materials accompanying either the item (which may or may not change before the meeting.) As previously reported by LBREPORT.com, on July 8 incoming Superintendent Dr. Jill Baker announced LBUSD would pursue a hybrid position, allowing parental/guardian input on their preference (on campus activities or online only.) But on July 14, one day after CA's two largest school districts (LA Unified & San Diego) announced online only instruction to start., Dr. Baker announced LBUSD would begin the school year online only, at least until Oct. 5. In adjacent Orange County, some school districts are taking differing positions (coverage by Voice of OC at this link.. A panel of experts has distanced itself from the OC Board of Education's recommendation that OC districts reopen schools without face masks and other requirements. (Voice of OC coverage here)
On June 25, Catholic schools (in L.A. County, Santa Barbara and Ventura) announced a plan to reopen for on-campus instruction -- with social distancing requirements (statement here.
