Man Is Fatally Shot 300 block E. 17th St. LBPD Investigating As Gang Related

CD 1 has had highest number of shootings and shooting homicides since Jan. 1; Council incumbent Zendejas voted for FY21 city budget that defunded nearly 50 officers (on top of nearly 200 erased by a prior Council and not restored), doesn't support restoring field anti-gang unit

(July 13, 2021, 6:30 a.m.) -- A 37 year old man was fatally shot on the morning of July 11 in the 300 block of E. 17th St. (CD 1/Zendejas) after a suspect followed the victim as he entered an apartment. LBFD took him to a hospital in critical condition and he succumbed to his wounds by dusk. LBPD says the motive isn't known but the case is being investigated as gang related.

LBPD says in a release:

On July 11, 2021, at approximately 9:13 a.m., officers were dispatched to a report of shots fired in the 300 block of East 17th Street, which later resulted in the death of a male adult.

Officers arrived on scene and located a male adult victim suffering from apparent gunshot wounds to the upper and lower torso. They immediately began performing life-saving measures until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived on scene to render aid. The victim was transported by ambulance to an area hospital where he was listed in critical condition. Later that evening, at approximately 7:00 p.m., Homicide Detectives responded to the scene after receiving notification the victim succumbed to his injuries.

The victim has been identified as Bernardo Solorio, a 37-year-old Long Beach resident.

The preliminary investigation suggests a male suspect followed the victim on foot to an apartment complex. The suspect opened fire on the victim before fleeing the area on foot toward Long Beach Boulevard. Gang detectives initially responded to canvass the scene for witnesses and evidence. While the motive is not yet known, the case is currently being investigated as gang-related...

Residents of CD 1's primarily working class Council district, represented by Zendejas since December 2019, have experienced the highest number of shootings (fatal + wounding + vehicles/bldgs hit, casings found) since Jan. 1, 2021. In Sept. 2020, Zendejas voted (with her colleagues 9-0) to defund nearly 50 officers (in the FY 21 City Hall spending budget) and failed to make a motion to restore LBPD's former field anti-gang unit. Since Jan. 1, Zendejas' CD 1 has the highest number of shootings (fatal + wounding + vehicles/bldgs struck) and includes the highest number of shooting homicides (now 7) since Jan. 1, 2021.

Zendejas' 2019 election was supported by $30,000 made in three $10,000 contributions by LB's police officers union, immediate past CD 1 incumbent Lena Gonzalez and Mayor Robert Garcia (using his 2024 Lt. Governor account.) The sums exceeded LB's limit on contributions to candidate-run campaigns by using an "independent" non candidate-run campaign run by the LB Firefighters Association.
