(July 16, 2021, 4:30 a.m., updated 11:42 a.m.) -- A woman was fatally shot shortly before midnight July 15 on Pine Ave. (CD 1/Zendejas) one block south of PCH 1. It's the second shooting homicide in CD 1 within the past four days just blocks away at LB Blvd.

In preliminary information, LBPD overnight Watch Commander Lt. Brandon Deis says that on Thursday, July 15, 2021 at about 11:50 p.m.., West Division Patrol Officers responded to the 1700 block of Pine Ave. regarding a person-hit shooting. Officers located a woman (adult) with a gunshot wound, began life saving measures and LBFD transported the victim to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

[UPDATE: In a midmorning release, LBPD identifies the victim as Dalila Williams, 44, of Long Beach. "The preliminary investigation suggests a male adult suspect was involved in a dispute with the victim, which escalated into a shooting. The motive for the shooting remains under investigation by Homicide Detectives." [END UPDATE]

As previously reported by LBREPORT.com, on July 11 a man was shot to death in the 300 block of E. 17th St. at LB Blvd. (CD 1/Zendejas) when a suspect followed him and shot him as he entered an apartment.

CD 1, a primarily working class Council district represented by Zendejas since December 2019, has experienced the highest number of shootings (fatal + wounding + vehicles/bldgs hit, casings found) in Long Beach since Jan. 1, 2021.

In Sept. 2020, Zendejas voted (with her colleagues 9-0) to defund nearly 50 officers (in the FY 21 City Hall spending budget) and failed to make a motion to restore LBPD's former field anti-gang unit.

Zendejas' 2019 election was supported by $30,000 made in three $10,000 contributions by LB's police officers union, immediate past CD 1 incumbent Lena Gonzalez and Mayor Robert Garcia (using his 2024 Lt. Governor account.) The sums exceeded LB's limit on contributions to candidate-run campaigns by using an "independent" non candidate-run campaign run by the LB Firefighters Association.
