(July 31, 2021, 6:20 a.m.) -- LBREPORT.com has learned that at about dusk on Friday July 30, shots were fired inside Scherer Park (CD 8/Austin) near its dog park (near Long Beach Blvd.) and a brief stroll from LBPD's North Division police station (also located in the park.) A male juvenile was hit and suffered a non-life-threatening wound.

In preliminary information, LBPD Watch Commander Shaleana Benson says that at roughly 7:45 p.m. July 30, officers responded to the 4600 block of Long Beach Blvd. regarding multiple shots fired. They found evidence of a shooting near the dog park inside Scherer Park and learned a male juvenile victim was transported to a local hospital via private vehicle.

The victim sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound; officers conducted safety checks in the area; no other victims were located; detectives assisted with the on-going investigation.

On May 12, 2019, someone fired shots at a man (adult) riding a bicycle in the 4900 block of LB Blvd. The rounds missed hitting the man but did strike and damage two vehicles parked in the area (LBREPORT.com coverage here.

Locating LBPD's North Division station in part of Scherer Park triggered a major controversy in 2002, with opponents decrying loss of park space and proponents contending it would make the area safer. (LBREPORT.com coverage here and here In 2007, the City Council put a City Attorney drafted version of a grassroots-sought "parks in perpetuity" charter amendment on the ballot. It required two for one replacement of park land taken for non-park uses, with replacement park land at another location.
