(July 8, 2021) -- A 78 year old Long Beach woman, who LBPD says was walking in a marked crosswalk with a green light, was struck and killed by a hit and run driver on Tuesday night July 6.

In a release, LBPD says Jere Whitney, 78, of Long Beach was crossing 4th St shortly before 10 p.m. while walking in a marked crosswalk with a green light, when the suspect vehicle (heading north on Ximeno) made a left turn onto 4th St., striking Ms. Whitney while she was in the marked crosswalk. "The suspect vehicle then fled the scene, traveling west on 4th St., LBPD says.

Ms. Whitney was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries...and on July 8th, LBPD detectives were notified that she had succumbed to her injuries.

LBPD says the suspect vehicle is described as a red Subaru Outback or Crosstrek.

LBPD asks anyone who may have information about what occurred to call Collision Investigation Detail Detective Kelsey Myers or Detective Joseph Johnson at (562)570-7355. Anonymous tips may be submitted through “LA Crime Stoppers” by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), downloading the “P3 TIPS” app to your smartphone (available at the Apple App store and Google Play), or visiting www.LACrimeStoppers.org.
