(June 26, 2001) -- Extending a local political dynasty, Suja Lowenthal has won the LB School Board seat vacated by Bonnie Lowenthal (who was recently elected to the 1st district City Council seat.)
Bonnie Lowenthal was formerly married to Alan Lowenthal, who was elected to the State Assembly in 1998 after representing the 2d district on the LB City Council since 1992. Suja Lowenthal is married to Dan Lowenthal (son of Alan and Bonnie).
Suja Lowenthal, who was active in the downtown "Plaza Coalition" (which waged a sophisticated campaign against aspects of City Hall's development plans for the former LB Plaza site), drew 52.5% of the vote.
Her closest rival was Mr. Ed Gonzalez, who finished with under a third of the vote. Mr. Gonzalez was endorsed by, among others, LB School Superintendent Carl Cohn, the four incumbent LB School Board members and Council incumbents Frank Colonna, Rob Webb and Jerry Shultz.
