(June 5, 2019, 7:30 a.m.) -- As reported LIVE on our front page last night (June 4), with 100% of precincts reporting:
Lena Gonzalez (D): 69.00% (26,343 votes) Jack Guerrero (R): 31.00% (11,835 votes) The numbers are unofficial and the final numbers will increase when provisional ballots and late-arriving vote by mail ballots are counted in the next few days (meaning "voter turnout" figures now will understate the actual voter turnout to some extent.) State Senator-elect Gonzalez has won the unexpired term of exited Senator Ricardo Lara (ends Dec. 7, 2020.) She will now stand for re-election as an incumbent state Senator for a full four-year term in the high-turnout March 2020 presidential primary with a November (presidential election) 2020 runoff only needed if she receives fewer than 50% of votes cast. Analysis/perspective coming separately on LBREPORT.com. Attention also now shifts to who will succeed her in LB's 1st Council district seat. LBREPORT.com was the ONLY LB news outlet to provide detailed "Follow the Money" coverage of the race:
LBREPORT.com was also the ONLY LB news outlet to provide extended VIDEO and AUDIO podcast coverage of the only face-to-face encounter ("candidate forum") between the two runoff candidates (May 6, Wrigley Ass'n):
Gonzalez turned down (declined to respond) an offer by LBREPORT.com to host a debate in the runoff (Guerrero accepted) and she avoided efforts by LBREPORT.com to speak with her during the race, treating her "Meet Lena" events as "closed to press" and at one point ducking out the back door of a Lakewood "Meet Lena" event.)
