(June 30, 2020. 7:45 a.m.) -- Mayor Robert Garcia said during his Monday June 29 webcast briefing that after meeting with representatives of Black Lives Matter Long Beach in the previous week, he will ask the City Council to approve allocating $2 million in state taxpayer funds as follows:

  • $1 million (in state taxpayer funds) for a "Black Health Equity Initiative" to address health disparities, administered through LB's Health Dept.,that would include allocations to train and support Black leaders and community groups and thereby build capacity to address these issues.

Mayor Garcia said the "Black Health Equity Initiative" is separate from other issues dealing with police accountability, reform and budget issues that he said will separately come to the Council.

  • Mayor Garcia said he will also propose that the Council allocate an additional $1 million in state taxpayer funds for a new "Community Recovery Fund" he said would be given to community groups in Long Beach assisting with COVID-19 responses including economic recovery needs, food, or health matters but must be about COVID 19. He said the "Community Recovery Fund" would be a separate program run out of LB's Health Dept.

Both items will come to the City Council for discussion and approval. Developing.
