(June 27, 2020. 4:30 p.m.) -- Updating a story LBREPORT.com reported less than 24 hours earlier, now SEVEN persons have been shot at five of six shooting crime scenes within the past three days in Central Long Beach and WLB.

In addition, one of those shot -- a 23 year old man wounded on June 24 at Seaside Park (1400 block Chestnut Ave.) -- has died. It's LB's 12th homicide of 2020, the 4th to date in LB's 1st Council district (details below.).

In the two shootings within the past 24 hours:

  • On June 27, 2020 at about 12:10 a.m., officers in the area of PCH/Pacific heard what they (correctly) believed was gunfire...and found a business struck by rounds along the south side of PCH between Pine Ave. and Solana Court (1st dist. border with 6th dist.). No persons were injured and LBPD's investigation is ongoing.

  • On June 26 at about 9:50 p.m., officers responded to the area of Webster Ave./@. Canton Street (7th dist.) and found a man (adult) shot/wounded along with bullet casings and strike marks to nearby vehicles. It's the same location where barely 25 hours earlier (June 25 at about 8:50 p.m.) a man (adult) was shot/wounded (and two men were subsequently located with gunshot wounds.)

Among the seven shootings with persons hit, one is now a homicide. The victim of a June 24 late afternoon shooting at Seaside Park (1400 block Chestnut Ave.) has died. In a June 27 release, LBPD describes the aftermath of the shooting, not previously released.

In its June 27 release, LBPD says officers responded at about 5 p.m. to a reported shooting June 24 at Seaside Park (1400 block Chestnut Ave., 1st Council district) and arrived to find citizens in the park attempting life-saving measures on the victim. LHPD officers took over, performed life saving measures and requested paramedics who transported the victim to a local hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

On June 26, detectives were notified that the victim had succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. He has now been identified as Jose Rodriguez, 23, of Long Beach. p>

[LBPD release text] The preliminary investigation revealed that Rodriguez was in the park when two unknown suspects approached him and began shooting. The suspects fled the park eastbound towards Chestnut Avenue. The exact motive for the shooting is currently unknown, however, the incident is being investigated as gang-related. Detectives are actively working to gather additional information to further the ongoing investigation.

Anyone with any information regarding the incident is urged to contact LBPD Homicide Detectives Shea Robertson and Travis Harris at (562) 570-7244. LB has had 12 homicides thus far in 2020, a third of which have been in LB's 1st Council district (which has also had the largest number of shooting victims to date.)

The 1st Council district's incumbent, Mary Zendejas, was elected in a November 2019 no-runoff special election with the help of $30,000 (three $10,000 contributions each) by the LB Police Officers Association PAC, LB Mayor Robert Garcia (using his 2026 "Lt. Governor" committee) and immediate past 1st dist. Councilwoman (now state Senator) Lena Gonzalez (using leftover funds from her 2019 state Senate campaign.)

The LBPOA/Garcia/Gonzalez contributions, which exceed amounts allowed to candidate-run campaign committees, bypassed that restriction by giving the sums to an "independent expenditure committee" run by the LB Firefighters Ass'n PAC (not subject to candidate committee contribution limits) which then used the sums to independently support electing Zendejas.
