(June 24, 2021, 4:35 a.m., updated 12:20 p.m.) -- LB's 8th Council district (Austin) had a double-shooting on Wednesday night (June 23) that left a man (adult) dead and another man wounded.

In an updated midday release, LBPD says it was a drive-by shooting.

The shooting occurred in the 5500 block of Ackerfield Ave. (between Paramount Blvd/Cherry Ave., south of South St., north of Market St./Candlewood St. (LB-Lakewood border.)

UPDATE (from LBPD release): Based on the preliminary investigation, the two shooting victims were gathered with two other acquaintances in front of an apartment complex on Ackerfield Avenue when a dark-colored sedan approached. An occupant from inside the sedan began shooting at the group, unprovoked, before fleeing the area in the vehicle with other occupants. The vehicle was last seen heading northbound toward South Street.

The decedent has been identified as Kenneth Cornett, a 27-year-old resident of Bell Gardens.

The investigation remains ongoing and is being investigated as gang-related. [end UPDATE]

LBPD Watch Commander Lt. Stephanie Hall said (preliminary information) that at about 10:30 p.m. officers responded to reports of gunshots in the 5500 block of Ackerfield Ave. On arrival they found two men (adults) suffering from gunshot wounds.

LBFD responded and pronounced one of the men deceased at the scene. The second victim was transported to a hospital in stable condition. The suspect(s) fled the area in a vehicle and "the incident appears to be gang related."
