(March 13, 2018, updated 2:30 p.m., 11:50 a.m. and 8:40 a.m.) -- Central LB had two "hit" shootings in broad daylight within twenty minutes on Monday March 12 [UPDATE] and the victim in one of the shootings has died. The first was near the location of the former "World Famous VIP Records" (PCH/MLK) just east of Poly High. The second -- now a homicide -- wasn't far away, north of PCH (near Mary Butler elementary school, north of LBCC PCH campus.) And the two "hit shootings" were preceded by a "no-person-hit" shooting less than two hours earlier on Pine Ave. just south of PCH.

LBPD Public Information Officer Arantxa Chavarria tells LBREPORT.com:

  • On March 12 at roughly 4:10 p.m., officers were dispatched to 1000 block of E. Pacific Coast Hwy regarding a hit shooting that just occurred; arriving officers found a male victim [age unclear] with a gunshot wound; LBFD transported him to a hospital.

  • On March 12 at about 4:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 1300 block of Wesley Drive regarding a hit shooting that just occurred; they found a man (adult) with a gunshot wound; LBFD transported the victim to a hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. [UPDATE] In a release, LBPD states that further investigation found that there was a physical confrontation between multiple suspects prior to the shooting. [end update]

[Update] LBPD PIO Sgt. Brad Johnson adds that at about 2:50 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 1700 block of Pine Ave. regarding a shots fired call, and then received a call from a possible victim in the shooting who indicated some person(s) shot at him and gave PD a description of possible suspects. Officers located the crime scene in the 1700 block of Pine; a possible suspect in the 1700 block of Loctst, and detained two possible suspectys in the 1700 block of Pine..LBPD says no injuries were reported. [end update]

LBPD says it's not immediately clear if the March 12 shootings are related to each other, but is investigating all three as possibly gang related.

The first shooting was roughly a block from the location where the nephew of the former chair of City Hall's now-former Youth and Gang Violence Prevention Task Force was fatally shot in December 2014 (PCH/Lemon). Despite the infusion of $40+ million annually from a June 2016 City Hall-sought LB voter-approved sales tax increase (Measure A), the City Council hasn't allocated funds sufficient to restore LBPD's former 22-member field anti-gang unit.
