(March 1, 2020, 9:00 p.m.) -- February 2020 ended with the fifth shooting crime scene in the 29 day month in LB's 1st Council district. Willmore City neighbborhood families heard gunfire followed by sirens and a police presence in the 11 p.m. hour on Saturday Feb, 29 with a crime scene located in the area of Golden Ave./6th St. (vicinity Chavez Park/Edison Elementary School.)

LBPD Public Information Officer Jennifer De Prez says officers responded at about 11:25 p.m., confirmed evidence of the gunfire (casings located) but no person(s) physically injured.

It was the fifth February shooting crime scene -- including a homicide in LB's East Village plus four non-fatal shootings -- in LB's 1st Council district. LBPD is investigating two of the February non-fatal shootings (Feb. 2 and 4) in the vicintiy of Drake Park in connection with juvenile alleged gang members allegedly involved in a number of LB shootings (fatal and non-fatal; LBREPORT.com video of LBPD news conference announcing arrests here.)

In early November, 1st district voters elected Mary Zendejas to fill their vacated Concil seat. In 2019, the 1st district had the highest number of LB's shootings and homicides. Ms. Zendejas' election was supported by immediate past 1st dist. Councilwoman (2014-2019) Lena Gonzalez (who advanced to the state Senate in June 2019), LB Mayor (and previous 1st dist. Councilman 2009-2014) Robert Garcia and the LB police officers union PAC. The three sources circumvented LB's limit on campaign contribution sums to candidate campaigns by giving $10,000 each (a total of $30,000) to an independent expenditure campaign supporting Zendejas run by the LB firefighters union PAC.
