White House COVID-19 Coordinator Dr. Birx Acknowledges 100,000-240,000 Americans Could Die Despite Current Mitigation/Restrictions; Displays Chart Showing CA Mitigations / Restrictions HAVE Had Beneficial Effect. CA Deaths Per Capita Lowest Among All States Compared To Areas That Delayed Similar Restrictions And Now Have Highest Deaths Per Capita (NY and NJ)

  • Dr. Fauci: 100,000-200,000 figure is sobering but be prepared for it. Don't be discouraged in coming weeks when figures go up because mitigation measures ARE working.
  • Dr. Birx: "If you're never within 6 ft of any single individual, it's best way to control virus."

(March 31, 2020, as streamed LIVE, headlined on front page 6:00 p.m.) -- Delivering grim news in the most upbeat way possible, the White House acknowledged at its March 31 daily COVID-19 briefing that 100,000-240,000 Americans could die from the virus despite current mitigation/restrictions but said strict or stricter observance of those restrictions could push deaths to the lower end of that range and possibly below it.

White House COVID-19 Task Force Coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx, MD displayed the charts below showing two curves: one with no restrictions (which forecast between 1.5-2.2 million deaths) compared to a second flatter curve showing forecasting between 100,000-240,000 deaths if current restrictions are observed.

Alongside President Trump and flanked by Dr. Anthony Fauci, Dr. Birx also displayed also a chart indicating that California's strict "Safer at Home" mitigation/restrictions and statewide closures HAVE had a beneficial effect. The lowest blue line on the chart (below) shows deaths per 100,000 population compared for California compared to areas that delayed applying such restrictions. The two curves showing the sharpest increases in deaths per capita are for New Jersey and New York where officials didn't apply restrictions/mitigation measures until later.

Dr. Fauci acknowledged that the 100,000-240,000 figure is sobering but said Americans should be prepared for it. He urged Americans not to be discouraged in the coming weeks when figures go up because mitigation measures ARE working. Dr. Fauci said it is his hope that with public observance of restrictions and mitigation measures, the ultimate number of deaths could be pushed to the lowest part of the curve or perhaps below it.

Dr. Birx added: "If you're never within 6 ft of any single individual, it's best way to control virus."
