Gunfire Just Blocks South of LBCC's Central LB Campus (1500 block Gaviota), Long Beach's Sixth Shooting Since March 1

(March 13, 2021, 4:40 p.m.) -- Gunfire flew in the midnight hour today (Mar. 13) in the neighborhood a few blocks south of LBCC's Central LB campus (CD /Saro.). It's LB's 6th shooting since March 1.

LBPD PIO Stephanie Hall tells LBREPORT.com that at about 12:10 a.m. on March 13 officers responded to a shots call in the area of 15th St/.Gaviota Ave., found a victim (male adult) who wasn't hit by the rounds and also found evidence that a shooting occurred. PIO Hall says it appears a car was involved but the circumstances aren't yet clear as the investigation continues.

It's the sixth shooting (including a homicide) since March 1 in neighborhoods just south of PCH in Central LB.

  • Monday March 8, 2021: 1100 block of E. 11th St. (CD 6/Saro), a woman standing in front of a residence with relatives says a sedan pulled up and someone fired shots at them. The rounds missed hitting people but officers found casings and an unoccupied vehicle and a building struck by gunfire.

  • Sunday March 7, 2021: Temple Ave.,/Anaheim St. (CD 4/Supernaw), a man says he was walking when he was shot/wounded. (LBPD found him in the area of 10th St/Temple Ave. and along with evidence of a shooting (bullet casings and a parked unoccupied vehicle struck by gunfire.)

  • Tuesday March 2: area of 17th St./Gundry Ave. (south of LBCC's Central LB campus, CD 6/Saro), a senior citizen was struck/wounded by gunfire at mid afternoon.

  • Monday March 1, mid afternoon gunfire in area of 4th St./Hermosa Ave. (Alamitos Beach, CD 2/Allen). LBPD found a man without injuries but with evidence of a shooting

    The City of Long Beach currently provides LB taxpayers with a budgeted sworn police level for routine citywide deployment of roughly 1.6 officers per thousand residents.)

    By comparison, L.A and Santa Monica budget roughly 2.49 officers per thousand residents (not including LA Airport/Port police.) Signal Hill, surrounded by Long Beach, budgets roughly 3.15 sworn officers per thousand residents for its taxpayers. [** July 2020 update: LA's City Council adopted a FY202-21 budget that reduced funding for LAPD that will produce a budgeted level by summer 2021 of roughly 2.43 officers/thousand.]
