The Andy St. multi-victim crime scene is especially saddening to those familiar with the efforts of its residents to push back crime. Andy Street in LB is one block long and packed with 24 multi-family dwelling units. A little over 15 years ago, violent crime on the street reached the point where the U.S. Postal Service refused to deliver mail to the area. Grassroots residents teamed with then-9th district Councilman (later Vice Mayor) Val Lerch and LBPD and successfully reduced crime.

But that was before Mayor Bob Foster and the LB City Council (which included then-Councilman Robert Garcia) erased over a period of years starting in 2009 208 budgeted citywide deployable police officers (over 20% of LB's citywide deployable level) including the elimination of LBPD's field anti-gang unit.

Under Mayor Garcia, despite LB voter approval of a June 2016 sales tax increase now bringing City Hall over $50 million more annually, LB's current City Council has restored only 22 of the budget-erased officers, leaving LB without 186 officers (including a field anti-gang unit) that it previously had but no longer has.

Less than a year ago on Aug. 6, 2018, a man (adult) was fatally shot in the same single block of Andy St. as the May 11, 2019 triple shooting.

On June 11, 2015, a man was shot/wounded on Andy St.

On April 4, 2015, a man was fatally shot nearby in the 2700 block of E. South St.

And on Feb. 22, 2014, a man was fatally shot on Andy St.
