(May 21, 2019) -- Long Beach City Councilman Dee Andrews, who since March 2007 has represented LB's 6th Council district spanning South Wrigley, LB's Poly High neighborhood and "Cambodia Town" and was chosen by his Council collegues as their Vice Mayor in July 2018, has announced he will seek re-election in March 2020 with the following as endorsers

  • LB's Police and Firefighter unions
  • Long Beach City Council incumbents Al Austin, Stacy Mungo, Suzie Price and Daryl Supernaw
  • City Auditor Laura Doud
  • LBUSD Boardmembers Diana Craighead and Jon Meyer
  • LBCC Trustees Doug Otto, Virginia Bazter and Sunny Zia
  • LB Airport Commissioner Wayne Chaney Sr.
  • Former LB Mayor Bob Foster
  • Former LB Vice Mayors/Councilmembers Suja Lowenthal and Val Lerch
  • Compton Councilwoman Janna Zurita
  • Signal Hill Planning Comm'r Christopher Wilson
  • L.A. County Supervisor Janice Hahn and former Supervisor Don Knabe
  • L.A. County District Attorney Jackie Lacey
  • Former L.A. County Sheriff Jim McDonnell
  • State Senator Steven Bradford, retired State Senator/Assemblywoman Betty Karnette
  • Assemblymembers Mike Gipson and Patrick O'Donnell

Andrews, most recently re-elected in 2016 in a write-in campaign, will have his name on the ballot in 2020 as a result of Charter Amendment BBB, the November 2018 measure that the City Council (without dissent) voted to put on the ballot, which now enables all Councilmembers to pursue third terms without a write-in requirement. The measure, opposed by LB's Reform Coalition but supported by leaders of Equity for Cambodians, was portrayed by Mayor Garcia and City Auditor Doud as closing a "loophole" to prevent Council incumbents from seeking more than three terms via write-ins. But the City Hall-drafted measure included a carve-out not counting partial terms (from "special elections" such as the one Andrews won in 2007) or write-in elections (which he won in 2016) as previous terms. This enabled enabling Andrews to seek another term in 2020, this time with his name listed on the ballot, his fourth full term, and fifth his initial partial term is included.

In February 2019, Suely Saro, an aide to immediate-past state Senator Ricardo Lara and a supporter of 1st dist. Councilwoman Lena Gonalez's bid to succed him, announced her candidacy for the Council seat. Ms. Saro, born in a Thailand refugee camp, is the daughter of parents who fled the Cambodian genocide.
