Update, May 12, 202, 6:00 p.m.: Council votes to approve, 9-0
(May 12, 2020, 1:35 P.M.) -- Mayor Robert Garcia has appointed (nominated) two individuals for positions on LB's Harbor Commission subject to City Council confirmation (voted approval) tonight. One is Sharon Weissman (not the subject of this article.) The other is Bobby Olvera, who from April 2014 to April 2017 was president of International Longshore Workers Union (ILWU) Local 13. As part of LBREPORT.com's continuing "Follow the Money" coverage, we report the following:

  • In May 2014 (shortly after becoming the union's president), ILWU Local 13's Political Action Committee gave $50,000 to an independent expenditure committee ("Working Families Supporting Robert Garcia for Mayor 2014") to support electing Robert Garcia Mayor of Long Beach. ILWU Local 13's PAC made two $25,000 contributions May 9, 2014 and June 2, 2014.

  • After Garcia was elected Mayor, ILWU Local 13's PAC gave $500 to Garcia's "officeholder account" in December 2014.

  • On Feb. 10. 2015 Mayor Garcia chose Mr. Olvera for a position on LB's Economic Development Commission

  • In the 2014 LB election cycle, the ILWU Local 13 PAC made campaign contributions to elect Roberto Uranga ($350, Nov. 2013 + 50 Mar 2014), Rex Richardson ($350, Jan. 2014) and Lena Gonzalez ($350, Nov. 2013, $400 May 2014) to the LB City Council. .

  • After their respective 2014 elections, ILWU Local 13's PAC gave $400 to the officeholder accounts of Councilman Richardson (May 2015) and $250 to Councilwoman Price (August 2015.)

  • In LB's 2016 election cycle, ILWU Local 13's PAC gave sums to elect Jeannine Pearce in LB's 2nd Council district ($400 Nov. 2015, $400 June 2016.)

  • During 2013-2017 periods when Mr. Olvera was ILWU Local 13's president, its PAC made contributions to a wide array of local and state candidates and incumbents visible here (2013-2014)/a> and here (2015-2016) and here (2017-2018) [caveat: note 4/14-4/17 period of his ILWU presidency]

    Four of the LB Councilmembers to whom ILWU Local 13 PAC gave sums while Mr. Olvera was its president will vote on Mayor Garcia's nomination of Mr. Olvera to LB's Harbor Commission tonight.
