(May 7, 2020) -- As flashed earlier today on LBREPORT.com's front page and Facebook platform, the Queen Mary is suspending its operations, it says temporarily, citing the effects of COVID-19 "stay at home" orders.

In a release shortly before noon, Urban Commons, the city's lessee for the Queen Mary and adjacent developable land stated the L.A. based real estate investment and development firm, along with the ship's management company, "has temporarily suspended its [the ship's] operations."

[Release text] California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, has outlined four stages of reopening for the State, with 'higher risk workplaces', such as the Queen Mary with more than 100,000 visitors per month, being among the last places to reopen. While leadership at the Queen Mary tried to keep the ship's doors open, with no clear end in sight, the decision was made to temporarily halt operations until the Governor's fourth stage of reopening the State, when the Stay-at-Home order ends.

...Over the past several weeks, leadership at the Queen Mary has explored multiple avenues, including housing the navy, marines and first responders, to maintain operations on the ship. These initiatives to help the community of Long Beach or support military personnel were ultimately unnecessary due to the city's cases of the virus remaining very low, around half of that of LA County per 100,000 residents.

"We hope to use this time to continue historic preservation projects aboard the Queen Mary," said Urban Commons Principal Taylor Woods. "As the ship will be closed to the public, we have a unique opportunity to both inspect and restore the Queen Mary without needing to consider operating hours..." [Mr. Woods said] that the Queen Mary's events calendar has been bolstered with sell-out events taking place on the land surrounding the ship. "2021 will have the best events yet," finished Woods. "And we can't wait to share our exciting line-up with the City of Long Beach!"

At the end of the business day, reaction from LB city management and LB elected officials was pending. Developing.
