(November 2, 2018, 7:15 p.m.) -- LBPD has arrested two suspects in the Oct. 9 midafternoon murder of Jose Corrales, 69, a grandfather fatally shot while watering his lawn in the WLB neighborhood of Summit/Canal near Cabrillo High School.

In a release today (Nov. 2), LBPD says its Detectives have determined that the murder is gang motivated and believe it may be correlated to an altercation earlier that afternoon (Oct. 9) at Cabrillo High.

In its release, LBPD states that on Nov. 2, LBPD Homicide Detectives in conjunction with LBPD's S.W.A.T. team executed a search warrant in the City of Lynwood and also identified and arrested two suspects, identified as:

  • Rhyan Burrell of Lynwood, 20, arrested/booked on suspicion of murder, carrying a loaded firearm in a vehicle, permitting/discharging a firearm from a vehicle, ex-felon in possession of a firearm and a gang enhancement.

  • Terrel Warren of Long Beach, 23, arrested/booked on suspicion of murder, carrying a loaded firearm in a vehicle and a gang enhancement.

"During their search, detectives recovered three firearms and ammunition. The firearms have been submitted to the Long Beach Crime Lab for forensic analysis. A vehicle was impounded during the execution of the search warrant and is believed to be involved with the murder," LBPD said in its release.

LBPD says it expects to present the case to the L.A. County District Attorney's office early next week for filing consideration.

On Oct. 10, LBPD confirmed to LBREPORT.com that there was a second shooting victim in the WLB drive-by crime. The second victim was a man (adult) seated in a nearby vehicle who was struck by gunfire and drove himself to a hospital.

LBPD says Mr. Corrales was "outside a residence with a group of male subjects when a light-colored sedan containing 3-4 subjects opened fire."

Mr. Corrales' murder was LB's 26th homicide of 2018 (LB now has 27) and was the 10th homicide of the year in LB's 1st Council district (Councilwoman Gonzales) which has had twice the number of homicides as the next nearest district (the adjacent 6th dist. of Vice Mayor Dee Andrews.)

The murder of Mr. Corrales horrified neighborhood residents and devastated Mr. Corrales' family. On October 10, Mr. Corrales' grandson, Jerry Rodriguez, webposted this message (amplified by LBREPORT.com at this link.)

On Oct. 12, family and community members held a candlelight vigil and march for Mr. Corrales (LBREPORT.com video coverage here.)
