UPDATE: State Sen. Janet Nguyen Falls Further Behind Dem Challenger Tom Umberg, And Long Beach Votes May Send SE LB-West OC Repub Incumbent Down To Defeat

Nguyen voted for Dem-backed SB 35 (enabled increased density for some housing developments by overriding local zoning/resident appeal rights) and SB 562 (LB City Hall-sought enabler for Civic Center transaction)

(Updated Nov. 21, 2018 from November 20) -- In a November 21 update, Senator Janet Nguyen (R, SE LB-West OC) has fallen further behind and is now more likely to become the latest Republican incumbent going down to defeat...with Long Beach voters sending her there.

The race remains too close for us to call, but in the most recent update (Nov. 21, 1:39 p.m.), Democrat challenger Tom Umberg has extended his lead over Nguyen by 1,419 votes, now amounting to 50.3% to 49.7% of votes counted to date. The L.A. County portion of the district is SE LB (southeast parts of LB's 5th, 4th and 3rd Council districts) and amounts to 13.3% of the state Senate district. Among those LB voters (last updated Tues. Nov. 20), Nguyen is trailing Umberg by 2,831 votes (16,180/54.79% to 13,349/45.21%). The next L.A. County update is scheduled for Friday Nov. 23.

Senator Nguyen surprised and angered a number of SE LB voters -- Repubs, Dems and independents -- by voting in favor of two controversial Dem-backed bills: SB 35 (authored by state Senator Scott Wiener, D, SF, in certain cases enables increased housing density that can override local zoning and neighborhood objections) and SB 562 (author: state Senator Ricardo Lara, D-LB-Huntington Park, facilitated the controversial taxpayer-costly Civic Center transaction.)
