(November 13, 2018) -- In a November 13 update, retired Sheriff's Lieutenant Alex Villanueva has extended his lead over incumbent L.A. County Sheriff Jim McDonnell It's now by 50.57% (987,609 votes) for Villanueva to 49.43% (965,417 votes) for McDonnell.

Although the race remains very close, it's an unwelcome turn of events for McDonnell who trails his challenger by 22,192 votes with an estimated 688,000 ballots remaining to be counted. The Registrar/Recorder says the remaining ballots consist of:

  • Provisional ballots: 405,000
  • Vote by Mail ballots: 275,000
  • Misc. ballots: 4,000 (includes damaged/withheld ballots)
  • Conditional Voter Registration: 4,000 (individuals who missed the Oct. 22 registration deadline who cast a ballot by going to a County designated site and registering to vote; their ballot is counted when their registration is verified.)

(The Registrar/Recorder says "results are subject to change throughout the Official Election Canvass period as our canvass staff process VBM envelopes and de-process precinct supplies. This estimate includes additional Vote by Mail Ballots postmarked on or before Election Day and received through last Friday.")

Whether Sheriff McDonnell, who was LBPD's Chief of Police after holding very high positions with LAPD, can make up that vote margin and reverse it, will become clearer by week's end; the Registrar/Recorder says the next ballot counting update will come on Friday, November 16.
