(November 13, 2018) -- In a November 13 update, retired Sheriff's Lieutenant Alex Villanueva has extended his lead over incumbent L.A. County Sheriff Jim McDonnell It's now by 50.57% (987,609 votes) for Villanueva to 49.43% (965,417 votes) for McDonnell.
Although the race remains very close, it's an unwelcome turn of events for McDonnell who trails his challenger by 22,192 votes with an estimated 688,000 ballots remaining to be counted. The Registrar/Recorder says the remaining ballots consist of:

This estimate includes additional Vote by Mail Ballots postmarked on or before Election Day and received through last Friday.") Whether Sheriff McDonnell, who was LBPD's Chief of Police after holding very high positions with LAPD, can make up that vote margin and reverse it, will become clearer by week's end; the Registrar/Recorder says the next ballot counting update will come on Friday, November 16.
