(Nov. 8, 2019, 10:05 p.m.) -- With 733 additional ballots counted on Friday Nov. 8 (provisional ballots plus late arriving vote by mail ballots), voter turnout/ballots cast in the Nov. 5, 2019 1st district no-runoff special election now amounts to roughly of 13.38% registered voters. (Caveat: this figure is approximate as we don't yet have the finalized updated number of 1st dist. registered voters.)
The new tally didn't significantly change the relative percentages received by the candidates. Zendejas had 31.28% of votes at the end of election night; she has 31.79% as of November 8. And the net result remains the same: Mary Zendejas will become LB's newest Councilmember with less than a third of the votes cast.
By way of comparison, below are the figures from the election night tally: MARY ZENDEJAS (N) 608 31.28% [Scroll down for further.] |
The no-runoff special election was held to fill a Council vacancy created when 1st dist. Councilmember Lena Gonzalez pursued and won a state Senate seat vacated by the incumbent, Ricardo Lara, who sought and won election as statewide Insurance Commissioner. Ten years ago in 2009, Robert Garcia was elected to the City Council in the 1st district with roughly 40% of the vote, finishing first in a no-runoff seven candidate field to fill a Council vacancy created when 1st dist. Councilwoman Bonnie Lowenthal was elected to Assembly.
When sworn into office in mid-December, Councilwoman Zendejas' term of office will take her through Dec. 20, 2022. Under the Garcia-Doud (Nov. 2018 LB voter approved) Charter Amendment BBB, Councilwoman Zendejas can pursue up to three more four-year terms without facing a write-in requirement.
