(Nov. 8, 2019, 10:05 p.m.) -- With 733 additional ballots counted on Friday Nov. 8 (provisional ballots plus late arriving vote by mail ballots), voter turnout/ballots cast in the Nov. 5, 2019 1st district no-runoff special election now amounts to roughly of 13.38% registered voters. The no-runoff special election was held to fill a Council vacancy created when 1st dist. Councilmember Lena Gonzalez pursued and won a state Senate seat vacated by the incumbent, Ricardo Lara, who sought and won election as statewide Insurance Commissioner.

Ten years ago in 2009, Robert Garcia was elected to the City Council in the 1st district with roughly 40% of the vote, finishing first in a no-runoff seven candidate field to fill a Council vacancy created when 1st dist. Councilwoman Bonnie Lowenthal was elected to Assembly.
