(Nov. 26, 2020, 11:30 a.m.) -- Long Beach had another shooting in the LA County-managed Carmelitos affordable housing development. It happened on Nov. 25 (the night before Thanksgiving.)

LBPD Public Information Officer Allison Gallagher says (preliminary information) that a man (18 yrs old) was shot/wounded in the 1100 block of Via Wanda on Nov. 25 at about 8:40 p.m.

Officers foud evidence including bullet casings but LBPD says the victim "was not cooperating with the investigation" and the motive for the shooting is curently unknown.

Earlier this year:

  • In Jan 2020, gunfire shattered windows in the 900 block of Via Carmelitos. .
  • In Feb, 2020, gunfire flew in the 900 block of Via Wanda; no persons were hit and a suspect was arrested.
  • On July 17, 2020 a man (adult) was shot/wounded in the 1100 block of Via Wanda.
  • On Aug 6, 2020 a man (adult) was shot/wounded in the 5300 block of Lime Ave. (a wesrern gateway to Carmelitos.)
  • On Sept 29, 2020 in the 800 block of Via Wanda, officers found evidence of a shooting with no persons hit. A few hours later at about midnight, police gfot a report of a shooting in the same block. A woman said she was parked in her vehicle when suspects drove by and shot at her. Police found strike marks on her car; the rounds missed hitting her.

A year ago in Aug. 2019, a man was shot/killed in the 900 block of Via Wanda

And two years ago in September 2018, LBCC football playher Guy Alford was shot to death at a drive-through restaurant in the 5100 block of Atlantic Ave. (western gateway to Carmelitos.)

  • The NLB homicide leaves the 9th Council district (Richardson) with the same number of fatal shootings since June 1 as Central LB's 1st Council district (Zendejas) (although the 1st district has double the number of other shootings, esceeding all other LB Council districts.) (See LBREPORT.com shooting dashboard here.)

The fatal shooting comes just days after the City Council approved an ambitious plan (advanced for years by Councilman Richardson) to rebuild Artesia Blvd. into an improved thoroughfare (traffic planners insist on including bike lanes and "complete streets" pedestrian elements) funded in large part by taxpayer "grants" from various agencies.
