(November 28, 2020, 6:30 a.m.) -- The NLB neighborhood near a park named for fomer LB Police Officer Corporal Ed ("Pops") Davenport experienced midnight hour gunfight between two men that left buildings hit and bullet casings found in the area 2600 bock of 56th St. (just west of Paramount Blvd. south of South St.)

It's the latest shooting in LB's 8th Council district (Al Austin, re-elected Nov. 3 with support of the LB police officers union PAC)

In preliminary information, LBPD Public Information Officer Allison Gallagher says that on Nov. 27 at about 12:30 a.m. officers reeponded to a shots call, found a man (adult) weho said an unknowm male suspect (age not provided) approached him and shot at him, and the victim shot back at the suspect. The suspect fled the scene before police arrived; officer detained, interviewed and later released the victim .

Officers found bullet casings and buildings that were struck by gunfire. "The motive for the shooting is believed to be gang related," PIO Gallagher says.

Incumnbent Austin (elected 2012) was among Councilmembers (including then Councilman-Vice Mayor Robert Garcia) who voted in 2013 to defund LBPDs field anti-gang unit (20 officers + 2 sergeants.) Neither Councilman Austin nor now-Mayor Garcia have sought to restore the field anti-gang unit despite LB voters' approval of the 2016 Measure A sales tax increase (bringing City Hall a "blank check" cash infusion (pre-COVID) of $60+ million annually.) (LBREPORT.com coverge here.)

In September 2020 (just weeks before his Nov. 2020 runoff election), Austin announced a $2 million grant from the National Park Service for "Phase II" development of Davenport Park. Phase I provided a playground, tot lot and sports related amnenties. .
