"In my mind, the unsung hero in this saga is the family dog, whose barking alerted the family before it was too late. Imagine having a stranger, holding a knife, already inside your house and everyone is asleep. If not for that dog, the outcome could have been tragic." Jerry Shultz, founder, South of Conant Neighborhood Watch.

(Nov. 21, 2020) -- A 32 year old Los Angeles man, spotted in the 3 a.m. hour Nov. 13 by LB's all-volunteer South of Conant Neighborhood Watch allegedly walking with a knife in the area of Albury/Monlaco, is in custody, booked on charges including at least one felony, after he allegedly entered a home in the 3600 block of Ocana Ave....where the family's barking dog alerted sleeping family members to the intruder.

Mr. Shultz says a family member later told him that after their dog awakened them, they saw the suspect in their living room. They yelled at him, he ran out the back door and the resident called LBPD.

Officers responded swiftly and in force, set up a containment perimeter and successfully located and arrested the suspect at about 4:40 a.m. in the 5700 block of Monlaco Rd.

LBPD Public Information Officer Allison Gallagher tells LBREPORT.com that Keenan Christopher Jr., 32, of Los Angeles, was booked on suspicion of residential burglary, carrying a concealed dirk or dagger, possession of unlawful paraphernalia, and loitering on private property. (LBPD says bail was set at 50,000; LASD's web says bail was $70,000.)

Mr. Shultz. a retired LASD Deputy Sheriff and former LB Councilman (9th dist., 1994-2002) created the all-volunteer South of Conant Neighborhood Watch and cooperates closely with LBPD. He notes his Neighborhood Watch partners that night were Vic Gonzalez and Rock Schumacher.

In addition to crediting the family dog for sounding the alarm, Mr. Schultz regularly reminds residents to lock and double-check locks on at their patio doors and all doors. "Light it up. Lock it up: his NextDoor dispatches say.
