(October 2, 2018, 5:15 p.m.) -- Heads-up: Your smart phone or wireless device may send you a TEST message with a loud electronic tone on Wednesday Oct. 3, 2018 at 11:18 a.m. in a TEST of the nationwide "Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) system.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will send the TEST message at 11:18 a.m. Wednesday "to assess the system's capabilities to send a message simultaneously nationwide and determine where improvements are needed. This test will be immediately followed by a nationwide Emergency Alert System (EAS) test." FEMA says the "WEA test message will be sent to cell phones that are connected to wireless carriers participating in WEA. Similar to AMBER Alert messages, a loud electronic tone will precede the WEA test message. The City of Long Beach says: FEMA's WEA system is different from the City's AlertLongBeach emergency warning system. It is not necessary to sign-up to receive federal alert messages. However, residents wishing to receive local alert messages, during times of emergency, must sign up for the City's AlertLongBeach warning system. The City recently made sign-up for AlertLongBeach faster and easier. Residents who want to sign up to receive notifications through AlertLongBeach, or who want to update their information in the system should visit the Department of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Communications website at www.longbeach.gov/DisasterPreparedness. Again: it will be a TEST on Wednesday Oct. 3 at 11:18 a.m. [Scroll down for further.] |
