(Oct. 22, 2019, 2:30 p.m.) -- A new three-year contract with the LB Firefighters Ass'n will cost LB's General Fund $10.17 million. [Source: Fiscal Impact, city management memo, Oct.22, 2019 City Council agenda item.] The Mayor/Council offered that sum outside of public view in closed session discussions; the union's rank and file accepted it and a legally required publicly cast Council vote is scheduled on the contract at the Oct. 22 Council meeting,
The Firefighters three-year $10.17 million comes on top of $17.8 million over three years for a new contract with LB's Police Officers Ass'n recently approved by the Mayor/Council. LBREPORT.com also lists below some of the recent campaign contributions and officeholder account made by the LB Firefighters Ass'n PAC to Councilmembers who'll be voting on the contract as well as to Mayor Garcia who was allowed to participate in closed session discussions on its terms. Among contributions by LB Firefighters Ass'n Local 372 PAC:
The LB Firefighters Ass'n PAC was also among contributors to the 2018 campaign to re-elect then-Councilwoman (now state Senator) Lena Gonzalez. In July 2019, the Firefighters union PAC contributed $2,500 to the campaign to elect Mary Zendejas to the vacated 1st district Council seat. The Firefighters union has also (since Sept. 2019) spent over $9,000 in independent expenditures (mailers, canvassing, etc.) to support electing Ms. Zendejas.
The LB Firefighters Ass'n also contributed sums to the political committee run by Mayor Garcia for the June 2016 Measure A sales tax increase, which Garcia then renamed to support the June 2018 Measure M utility revenue transfer and then renamed for the campaign to approve the Nov. 2018 Charter Amendments AAA-DDD. Measure A and Measure M provided the Mayor/Council with General Fund revenue that can be used (and frees up other Gen'l Fund revenue to use) for multiple items including pay raises. Charter Amendment BBB enables Mayor Garcia and Council incumbents to seek third terms without write-in requirements. Vice Mayor Andrews and Councilman Austin are using it now in their March 2020 re-election campaigns; Mayor Garcia will be able to use it when he seeks a third term in 2022.
