(Oct. 21, 2019, 9:40 p.m.) -- A Long Beach man (18 years old at the time of the crime, 19 yrs old now) pleaded "no contest" today (Oct. 21) to one felony count of assault by means of force likely to produce great bodily injury against a 16 year old African-American boy a few blocks west of LB's Poly High and admitted to allegations that it was a hate crime and committed to benefit a criminal street gang.

Superior Court Judge Daniel Lowenthal immediately sentenced the defendant, Bryan Blancas, to eight years in state prison.

The assault took place near the intersection of E. 15th St. and Long Beach Blvd. in LB's 1st Council district.

LBPD says a crime report was filed on May 15, 2019, its Gang Detectives worked in conjunction with LBPD patrol officer to identify suspects and on May 21 LBPD took Blancas into custody along with two male juveniles followed by a third male juvenile in late June. (The juveniles are within the jurisdiction of CA's juvenile justice system.)

The L.A. County District Attorney's office says in a release that Blancas and his friends confronted the victim who attempted to flee, when Blancas knocked the victim to the ground and punched and kicked him multiple times in the head, face and torso.
