(Oct. 1, 2020, 1:45 p.m.) -- LB's Rose Park area (west of Redondo Ave., south of 10th St.) had what LBPD is investigating as a gang-related fatal shooting in the midnight hour today (Oct. 1.) It's LB's 27th murder of 2020 (with a quarter of the year left to go.)

The fatal shooting was in LB's 2nd Council dist.repreesented by outgoing incumbent Jeannine Pearce who on Sept. 8 joined a unanimous Council in voting to defund 48 officers in FY21 (after several years of Councils failed to restore LBPD's field anti-gang unit and failed to restore 180+ officers from a 2009-2015 defunding. Pearce (who chose not to seek a second term) and most Council incumbents have endorsed Cindy Allen for the opern 2nd dist. Council seat against Reform Ticket candidate Robert Fox..

In a release, LBPD states that at about 12:30 a.m. on October 1, officers responded to a reported shooting victim at a residence on the 900 block of Obispo Ave. Officers found a man (adult) down in the common area of a residential complex and began performing life-saving measures as the man had multiple gunshot wounds. LBFD arrived, transported the victim to a hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The victim has been identified as James Magee, 23, of Long Beach. <;p>The preliminary investigation revealed Magee was standing near a residential complex when the suspect(s) approached and fired at him, then fled the area, possibly in an unknown color sedan.

"The exact motive for the shooting remains under investigation; however, the shooting is being investigated as gang-related," LBPD's release said.
