(Oct. 29, 2020, 8:30 a.m.) -- A man was shot/wounded while sitting in his vehicle last night (Oct. 28.) in a parking lot along Santa Fe Ave. at roughly Summit St. (about halfway between LBPD's West Division station and Cabrillo High.)

LBPD Watch Commander Lt. James Richardson says that at about 7:55 p.m. Oct. 28, officers responded to the area of Santa Fe/Summit St. (border 1st/7th Council districts) and found a man (adult) shot in a vehicle; parked in a parking lot. LBPD found evidence of a shooting (casings).

The latest shooting occurs in the context of multiple shootings and a recent disturbing development that may signal fear of retribution from gangs and/or a lack of confidence in LBPD's ability to protect the public,

On Oct. 27-28, Long Beach had two person-hit shootings and in both cases the victims said they were "walking outside in Long Beach" when they were hit but declined to tell police where the shootings occurred

LB had three shootings on Oct, 25 (coverage here (CD8). here (CD1) and here (CD4).

On Oct. 10, LB's 1st Council district had two shooting crime scenes within half an hour in the Willmore City historic neighborhood; bullet casings were found but no persons were hit (LBREPORT .com coverage here.. On Oct. 9, two people were shot/wounnded in 1st district's Seaside Park/Washington Middle School neighborhood. LBREPORT.com coverage here. It was the 6th shooting crime scene -- including two homicides -- within 30 days in the 1st Council district.

LBPD continues to say in many cases that "motives for the shootings" are unknown, declining to acknowledge public speculation that a gang war is taking place in parts of Long Beach.

As previously reported by LBREPORT.com, a former Council (that included then-Councilmembers Robert Garcia and Dee Andrews) erased LBPD's former field anti-gang unit (20 officers + 2 sergeants). LB's current Council failed to restore funding for the field anti-gang unit despite LB voter approval of the 2016 Measure A ("blank check") 2016 sales tax increase. In Sept. 2020, the Council voted 9-0 to defund 48 additional officers on top of 180+ officers not restored from 2009-2015 defundings.
