(Oct. 16, 2020, 1:15 p.m.) -- After failing to provide information for over 24 hours, and not providing a public information officer or release to confirm unofficial information as it leaked out yesterday, CHP has issued a sparse release (11:36 a.m. Oct. 16) acknowledging that on Oct. 15 a CHP officer shot and killed an individual it calls a "pedestrian" that it says the CHP officers "encountered" (no explanation) within "the heavily vegetated area" adjacent to the on-ramp in the area of westbound Katella Avenue on-ramp to the southbound 605 freeway in the city of Los Alamitos.
The release says the officer-involved shooting occurred at about 9:20 a.m. on Oct. 15. "After contacting the pedestrian, the pedestrian produced a firearm and fired it at officers. One officer returned fire striking the pedestrian causing fatal injuries. As a result of this incident, one officer sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The officer is expected to make a full recovery," the release says. The CHP release doesn't indicate what led CHP's "encounter" with the individual it shot/killed? It also leaves uncler whether the term "pedestrian" is a euphemism for a transient/vagrant residing in the "heavily vegetated area." (Vagrants are chronicallly visible in the nearby Long Beach El Dorado Park/Nature Center area where fires have periodically broken out.) [Scroll down for further.] |
. LBREPORT.com has separately contacted the office of Assemlyman O'Donnell objecting to the failure of CHP's Westminster office to provide an accessible public information officer to confirm the basics of what occurred (in this case an alleged exchange of gunfire ending in a fatal shooting) for over 24 hours. CHP's Westminster office similarly failed to provide information to media outetls not on scene in connection with an Aug. 2020 fatal 405/605 shooting..
