(Oct. 14, 2020, 4:55 p.m.) -- LBUSD's Dooley Day Care (Child Development) Center (5075 LB Blvd.) has notified parents/guardians of a COVID-19 positive case from a person within the elementary schoo and, in what it said is "an abundance of caution," will close the school for 14 days, reopening on Oct. 29.
It's the seventh LBUSD site (list below) since Sept. 1 to notify parents/guardians of a positive COVID-19 case among staff or students at sites providing day care/child development programs. LBUSD schools otherwise remains closed for in-person instruction. An Oct 14 letter to Dooley CDC parents on LBUSD letterhead stated in pertinent part: At the end of last week, we became aware of a positive case of COVID-19 from a person within the elementary school. Although all of the protocols, notifications, cleaning, and steps were taken to ensure health and safety, we were notified today of an additional case. To be cautious, we consulted the Long Beach Health Department and determined that a temporary site closure is the recommended next step. We are writing to notify you that, effective Thursday, October 15th, the CDC facility at Dooley will be closed for 14 days. School will resume in person on Thursday, October 29th. Previous COVID-19 infections that prompted parental notifications occurred at Garfield Child Development Center (Sept; 1), Bixby Kids Club (Sept. 18), Webster Child Development Center (Sept. 23), Edison Head Start (Sept. 24), Jordan Baseball Program (Sept. 28) and Willard Child Development Center.. As previously reported by LBREPORT.com, the Irvine Unified School District and Los Alamitos Unified School District, which were among the first nearby to reopen for classroom instruction, are now seeing COVID-19 infections among students and staff. For their updated data, see IUSD dashboard here and Los Al.(Los Al district dashboard here.
Socially-networked parents on the Reopen Long Beach Schools Facebook page (roughly 1,900 members) continue to press LBUSD's administration and elected school board to return to in-classroom activities. Dispatches on its Facebook page frequently note the small percentages of COVID=19 affected staff and students. A separate Facebook group, Parents for Teachers LBUSD (6,600 members, mainly teachers) stresses the highly contagious nature of the virus, its potential to grow exponentially and urges continued caution to protect teachers and students (and their families) from becoming infected and passing the virus to others.
