(Oct. 14, 2020, 4:55 p.m.) -- LBUSD's Dooley Day Care (Child Development) Center (5075 LB Blvd.) has notified parents/guardians of a COVID-19 positive case from a person within the elementary schoo and, in what it said is "an abundance of caution," will close the school for 14 days, reopening on Oct. 29.

It's the seventh LBUSD site (list below) since Sept. 1 to notify parents/guardians of a positive COVID-19 case among staff or students at sites providing day care/child development programs. LBUSD schools otherwise remains closed for in-person instruction.

An Oct 14 letter to Dooley CDC parents on LBUSD letterhead stated in pertinent part:

At the end of last week, we became aware of a positive case of COVID-19 from a person within the elementary school. Although all of the protocols, notifications, cleaning, and steps were taken to ensure health and safety, we were notified today of an additional case. To be cautious, we consulted the Long Beach Health Department and determined that a temporary site closure is the recommended next step. We are writing to notify you that, effective Thursday, October 15th, the CDC facility at Dooley will be closed for 14 days. School will resume in person on Thursday, October 29th.

Because of this positive case, we are informing you about COVID-19 and how to best protect your families and prevent the spread of the disease. Symptoms include fever, cough, and shortness of breath, loss of taste or smell, headache, muscle aches, and can sometimes cause very mild illness in children. Currently, there is no known treatment or vaccine available for COVID-19. If you or your child experience these symptoms, or any other symptoms please contact your healthcare provider and let them know that you may have been exposed to COVID-19.

COVID-19 testing is NOT required for your child to return to school after 14 days of quarantine are over. If your child does develop symptoms, please contact your child’s pediatrician. If no symptoms have developed during the quarantine period, your child may return to school on October 29, 2020.

The recommended temporary site closure is in an abundance of caution and we ask you to closely monitor your child’s health for symptoms of illness. Because we value the privacy of individuals, we cannot share more details about the circumstances of this situation. Thank you for your patience, understanding, and diligence about monitoring your child’s health.

During the facility closure, the site will explore learning and programs that can be provided virtually and send you follow up communication. We are disappointed about the need to create a physical break from our school in the next 14 days. We will miss seeing you on campus, but student and staff health is our greatest concern. If you have any medical questions or concerns, please contact your medical provider. For questions about the CDC instructional program, please contact me directly. I am here for you, and I look forward to our return to campus.

Sincerely,

CDC Director

Socially-networked parents on the Reopen Long Beach Schools Facebook page (roughly 1,900 members) continue to press LBUSD's administration and elected school board to return to in-classroom activities. Dispatches on its Facebook page frequently note the small percentages of COVID=19 affected staff and students.

A separate Facebook group, Parents for Teachers LBUSD (6,600 members, mainly teachers) stresses the highly contagious nature of the virus, its potential to grow exponentially and urges continued caution to protect teachers and students (and their families) from becoming infected and passing the virus to others.
