North Long Beach (CD 9/Richardson) Had Two Shootings In Area Of Artesia Corridor On Saturday Oct 16, Latest One Was a Homicide

(Oct. 17, 2021, 4:55 a.m., updated 11:25 a,m) -- North Long Beach had two shootings within 24 hours in different areas on or near its Artesia Blvd. corridor on Oct, 16...and the most recent was a homicide.

  • At about 11 p.m. Oct. 16, a man was fatally shot (LBPD Watch Commander Lt. Paul Esko tells LBREPORT.com) in the 3300 block of E. 67th St. LBPD transported him to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Lt. Esko indicates it's not immediately known if the shooting was gang related.

    [UPDATE from LBPD release] 'Police were dispatched at anout 10:53 a.m...Upon arrival, officers located a male adult lying on the ground in the courtyard of an apartment building suffering from multiple apparent gunshot wounds to the upper and lower body. There were family members rendering medical aid to the victim until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived. Long Beach Fire transported the victim to a local hospital where he succumbed to the injuries.

    Homicide detectives responded to the scene, and at this time, the motive and circumstances surrounding the murder are unknown. Detectives will continue to investigate the crime by processing evidence and seeking out witnesses.

    The victim has been identified as Cesar Hernandez, a 30-year-old resident of Long Beach."

  • Ealier that day (minutes after midnight Oct. 16) a man was shot/wounded when (LBPD PIO Allison Gallagher tells LBREPORT.com) two male subjects (ages unclear) approached him in his parked car in the 400 block of E. Artesia Blvd. When he tried to drive off, at least one of the male subjects opened fire, striking him (inflicting a non-life-threatening injury) and also striking his vehicle.

    By way of context, less than a week earlier on Oct. 11, CD 9 had a shooting in the area of 69th St./Downey Ave. (just north of 91 freeway.) Police located a crime scene but no persons appear to have been hit.

    City Hall has big plans for Artesia Blvd. In July 2021, LB's Dept. of Public Works announced an "Artesia Blvd. Great Boulevard Project" between Gale and Downey Avenues with [City release text] "roadway improvements, median and median fencing improvements, traffic signal enhancements, installation of ITS (Intelligent Transportation System) equipment, Class IV bike lanes, bulb-outs, stormwater bio-retention treatments and wayfinding signage."

    As of July 2021, estimated design + construction cost wasf $12+ million (funding approved from various ballot measures) with a request for funding for construction in an amount at that time "to be determined."
