(Oct. 10, 2021, 7:10 p.m.) --A man was shot/wounded on Oct. 9 in the area of PCH/Newport, a block east of Redondo (CD4/Supernaw.)

LBPD Public Information Officer Richard Mejia says that at about 11:05 p.m. officers were dispatched to the 3400 block of E. PCH (a block west of Redondo) but the calling party indicated they heard presumed gunfire in the area of PCH/Newport (east of Redondo) and saw a man (adult) with a gunshot wound being assisted by a female subject. The male victim and female subject fled before officers arrived.

Officers found evidence, including bullet casings and strike marks, in the area of PCH/Newport, PIO Mejia says.

Also in CD4, on Sept 28. a woman was robbed and shot in the area of PCH/Ximeno Ave. (east of the Traffic Circle.)

And on Sept. 16, a man (adult) was shot/wounded while he and a woman walked in an alley in the 1600 block of Junipero Ave. (south of PCH, west of Redondo.)

In late August, the City Council voted 8-0 (Price absent) to adopt a FY 22 City Hall budget that defunded 48 sworn officers on top of roughly 200 defunded by a previous Council (including LBPD's former field anti-gang unit.)

The Council's FY22 budget leaves Long Beach with a thinner per capita officer level than City Councils in Los Angeles, Santa Monica and Signal Hill provide for their taxpayers. Chart shows LB police level before Sept. 2020 defunding of 48 additional officers.
