(Sept. 30, 2020, 3:55 p.m.) -- The northern portion of LB's 8th Council district (Al Austin) had three shootings within a less than five hour period on Sept. 29. All of them were in or near "affordable housing" projects, two of them were in the same location in the Carmelitos housing project and all of them showed with evidence of shootings, one with strike marks to an occupied vehicle and another to an occupied residence struck by the gunfire, but with the rounds missing hitting persons.

LBPD Public Information Officer Allison Gallagher tells LBREPORT.com:

  • On Sept. 29 at about 7:50 pm, officers responded to the 800 block of Via Wanda (Carmelitos LA County-run housing project north of RR tracks between Atlantic and Orange Aves.) regarding a report of a no-person-hit shooting, canvassed the area and found evidence, including bullet casings, indicating that a shooting had occurred. No injured persons were located.

  • A little over four hours later on Sept. 29-30 at about midnight, officers responded a second time to the 800 block of Via Wanda in the Carmelitos housing project regarding a reported no-person-hit shooting; they located a woman (adult) who stated she was parking her vehicle on the street when a vehicle drove by and shot at her. Officers found strike marks on the victim’s vehicle although the rounds missed hitting her..

The reason for the shooting is unknown; a suspect vehicle is described as a dark colored sedan; there's no other suspect information immediately available.

LBPD says it's not certain if these two shootings are related.

  • In between the two Carmelitos shootings, on Sept. 29 at about 10:50 p.m. a no-person-hit shooting occurred in the 4900 block of Grisham Ave. (between the RR tracks and Del Amo Blvd., west of LB Blvd.) near the Grisham Affordable Housing development (privately operated 5021(c)(3).)

Officers located evidence of a shooting, including spent bullet casing and also found that an occupied residence had been struck as well. LBPD conducted safety checks in the residence and in the area and no injuries were reported.

No suspect description is available at this time and the reason for the shooting is unknown.
