Opines City Should Make It Easy For Public To See Elected Officials' Salaries
(Sept. 7, 2020, 9:15 p.m.) -- City Prosecutor Doug Haubert has become the first LB citywide elected official to voluntarily agree to a 10% reduction in his FY21 budgeted salary to match the loss of pay his staff will face as a result of furloughs.
In a webposted comment responding to LBREPORT.com's story today (Sept. 7) (that City FY21 budget documents don't disclose city wide electeds'six figure salaries/raises and those of city department heads), City Prosecutor Haubert wrote: [T]he salaries of all elected officials are public information, and the city should make it easy for the public to see it in the budget. For next fiscal year I agreed to a 10% reduction to match the loss of pay my staff will see through furloughs. Otherwise, should be same as last year. |
Mayor and City Council salaries are increased annually by a formula specified in the City Charter. In response to our inquiry, city management said Mayor Garcia's FY 21 base salary is $158,398.54. LBREPORT.com then looked at FY20's budgeted sums and learned that the Mayor's FY20 salary was $153,757...meaning he'll collects a $4,641 salary increase in FY 21. While Mayor Garcia and City Attorney Parkin can't turn down the raise, they can rebate their raises to the General Fund, if they wish. The Mayor's base $158,398 salary at means each City Council member will receive a salary in FY 21 of $39,597 ($158,398/4) in addition to receiving health, perks and other benefits for themselves and their familymembers (a sum we don't currently have that isn't publicly visible.)
