(Sept. 30, 2020, 12:52 p.m.) -- The drivers heading west on PCH just before Loynes Dr. didn't expect to see a car barreling toward them, but LBPD says that's what happened yesterday (Sept. 29), with initial information first flashed on LBREPORT.com's Facebook platform.

In a release today (Sept. 30), LBPD's preliminary investigation indicates a 31 year old LB man, driving a 2015 Nissan Altima - carrying four passengers -- heading south on PCH "at a high rate of speed" allegedly swerved into oncoming traffic, hit a 1994 Nissan Truck driven by a 63-year-old LB resident, continued southbound in the northbound lanes of PCH striking a 2010 Toyota Prius driven by a 58-year-old LB resident, which pushed the Prius into southbound PCH where it was struck by a 2008 Honda Pilot traveling southbound on PCH.

Among the four occupants of the alleged initiating Nissan Altima was a 30-year-old Los Angeles resident who, despite LBFD life savings measures, succumbed to his injuries at the scene. (identity withheld pending Coroner's notification of next of kin.) Three other occupants of the Nissan Altima were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

The two occupants of the Prius were transported to a local hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The only occupant of the Honda Pilot was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

LBPD says all drivers remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation. The drivers of the Prius, Honda and Nissan truck were released at the scene.

LBPD arrested the driver of the Nissan Altima, Mario Medrano, 31, of Norwalk, on suspicious of driving under the influence and murder. He was booked at the Long Beach City Jail and is being held on $2,000,000 bail.
