(Sept. 20, 2020, 8:58 a.m.) -- LBPD has provided the statement below regarding violent events that took place on Saturday Sept. 19 at LB's "Pike" commercial center.
[LBPD text] On Saturday, September 19, LBPD Officers received information of a large group gathering in the Pike area. Police resources were immediately directed to disperse the large group. |
By way of context, a publicly visible Sept. 18 Facebook dispatch from John Sangmeister indicates that Pike Outlets management informed tenants that a "National Day of Protest event" was scheduled for Los Angeles on September 19 "and there is a possibility that activity from this event may carry over to the Long Beach area and potentially The Pike Outlets. Pike Security as well the Long Beach Police Department are aware and will have an increased presence..."
Also by way of context, on August 9, 2020 gunfire flew and a male juvenile was shot/wounded in the midnight hour in the "Pike" commercial area.
And the Pike commercial area was an initial gathering place for a May 31, 2020 crowd that began looting which ultimately spread through much of LB.
LBREPORT.com is unaware [we'll stand corrected if present evidence of the contrary] of any downtown LB business operator or business group that publicly objected in City Council testimony, verbal or written, to the Sept. 8 Council vote (9-0) adopting a FY 21 City Hall budget recommended by Mayor Robert Garcia that defunded 48 more police officers on top of 180+ officers erased in a 2009-2015 defunding. Among officers erased in the previous defunding (and not restored despite $60+ million annually from the 2016 Measure A sales tax increase) was LBPD's former field anti-gang unit (20 officers + 2 sergeants.).The net result has left Long Beach taxpaying residents and businesses with a significantly thinner per capita police level than surrounding cities provide.
