(Sept. 24, 2020, 5:45 a.m.) -- Parents on the FacebooK page (with over 1,500 members) are mobilizing to press LB's elected policy setting school board to rescind its March 2020 vote giving non-elected Superintendent Dr. Jill Baker sweeping powers, including the power to keep LB schools closed.
On Sept. 22, Milliksn High/Rogers Middle School parent Brenda Witt Durnin wrote *******Call to Action****** Ms. Witt Durnin followed up on Sept. 23: Here is my email to our LBUSD board asking them to rescind the Emergency Response Resolution to COVID-19. We need our board to know this is not okay. The position of superintendent should not have full authority, without board approval, on all decisions related to the response to coronavirus.
As of dawn Sept. 24, it's unclear if any School Board incumbents, or parents, will agendize the item for possible voted action on Sept. 29. Absent an agenda item, parents can talk but the Board can't take voted action. On the Reopen Long Beach Schools Facebook page, a LB parent has also noticed (with displeasure) that School Board runoff election candidates Tonia Reyes Uranga and Erik Miller haven't taken a position on opening. At the same time, contrary views are visible on the Long Beach Parents for Teachers Facebook page whose 6,500 members generally echo the views of teachers in supporting distance learning and cautioning against too swift reopening. . Some OC parents and teachers also oppose reopening too soon. Coverage on Voice of OC at this link indicates "some teachers and community members are beginning to pushback. More than a few teachers are talking about a potential strike or taking other actions if districts keep moving to open without assuring them there are adequate safety measures. "The sentiment is -- if it comes to it -- teachers won’t show up. A strike is the very last resort. None of us really want that," one teacher from the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District told the Voice of OC. "We don'’t want to come back at least until it’s safe. Maybe in the second semester."
