(Sept. 2, 2020, 9:45 p.m.) -- Southwest Airlines has requested, and LB Airport has awarded the carrier, all 17 flight slots relinquished by JetBlue (which chose to cease operating in Long Beach effective Oct. 6.)

Southwest will now have 34 of LGB's 53 currently available flight slots.

In a release, LGB management says it invited other carriers to add their names to a waiting list by August 28 and says "some carriers expressed interest, but indicated the timing was not ideal. Delta Air Lines and Hawaiian Airlines, already on the permanent waiting list, declined to take additional slots at this time."

"[B]ased on the procedures and protocol outlined in Section 4 of City Council Resolution No. RES-18-0176" LGB awarded Southwest Airlines all 17 of Jet Blue's former flight slots.

Southwest began flying at LGB in 2016 and has steadily increased its presence as flight slots became available. LGB currently offers a total of 53 flight slots, 41 of which are permanent and 12 of which are supplemental subject to review of the annual noise budget.

Other operators flying at LGB are (total flight slots in parentheses) Delta (12) American Airlines (3) , Hawaiian Airlines (2), Fed Ex (1) and UPS (1)
