(Sept. 28, 2021, 5:35 .a.m. following multiple Sept. 27 reports as breaking) -- In the 3 p.m. hour Sept. 27, a fight between (LBPD description) "multiple subjects" brought an LBUSD School Safety Officer (LBUSD description) "conducting safe passage for students" to the area of Spring St./Palo Verde Ave. just north of Millikan High.

Third party video, echoed on social networks (unclear who shot the video) shows that as the officer approached a vehicle outside a nearby business (after the groups' altercation), the vehicle suddenly accelerated. The video leaves somewhat unclear how close the approaching officer was to the vehicle when it suddenly accelerated.

The officer fired at the vehicle, wounding a woman (adult) last reported in critical condition.

LBUSD says there's "no indication any students were injured." A bullet hole was visible in a right side back window of a vehicle stopped on Spring St. surrounded by red tape.

School Safety Officers are armed but aren't LBPD officers. LBUSD has turned investigation of the shooting over to LBPD. LBPD also indicates that the DA will also conduct an independent investigation (strongly indicating the woman shot was unarmed.)

Initial information from officialdom was incomplete and late in coming. Hours passed before LBPD acknowledged that anyone had been shot and that the person shot was a woman (an adult.)

Citing LBPD's investigation LBUSD never did so. As of dawn Sept. 28, it's unclear what extent, if at all, the woman was involved in the "altercation" that led to the chain of events. An individual citing an eyewitness has told LBREPORT.com that the woman got in the vehicle after the altercation.

It's also unclear roughly how large the altercation was (roughly how many individuals were involved) [LBREPORT.com believes LBUSD has a rough idea], how many similar off campus "altercations" have occurred at Millkan in the past six months or the motivation for the latest altercation.

Shortly before 6 p.m., LBPD Tweeted that an officer involved shooting occurred in which LBPD wasn't involved and LBPD was assisting an unnamed "other agency" with the investigation. Shortly after 10:30 p.m., LBPD's statement issued a statement as follows;

[LBPD statement] On 09/27/21 at approximately 3:12 p.m., officers responded to the area of Spring Street and Palo Verde Avenue regarding a hit shooting.

Upon arrival, officers determined a Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) school safety officer had discharged their firearm, striking a female adult in the upper body.

The Preliminary investigation revealed the school safety officer responded to an altercation between multiple subjects. When the subjects attempted to flee in a vehicle, the school safety officer approached the vehicle and the shooting occurred.

Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) responded to the scene and transported the female adult to a local hospital where she is in critical condition. At this time, no additional injuries have been reported.

It should be noted no Long Beach Police Department employee was involved during the incident. The Long Beach Police Department is only functioning in an investigative capacity.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office will also be conducting an independent investigation of the incident. The investigation is ongoing.

LBUSD didn't issue any statement until shortly before 6 p.m. when it said "an incident occurred in which School Safety Officer discharged his duty weapon." Nearly fours later, LBUSD said that shortly after 3 p.m. the officer "was conducting safe passage for students leaving Millikan' and said the officer approached a group of individuals to investigate an altercation' during which he discharged his duty weapon."
