(Sept. 21, 2021, updating previous at 4:50 a.m.) -- As flashed on LBREPORT.com's Facebook platform on Monday afternoon Sept. 20, a Signal Hill police officer shot and killed a knife-wielding suspect in the 1000 block of E. Willow St. following a stabbing outside a grocery store in the 1600 block of E. Willow St.

LASD, assisting SHPD in investigating what occurred, said in a Sept. 20 evening statement that the stabbing wounded a man (adult); a SHPD officer spotted the suspected stabber a few blocks west on Willow St.; the officer tried to detain the suspect who allegedly continued to flee, produced a large knife and allegedly attacked the SHPD officer. An officer-involved shooting followed.

The suspect, described as a Hispanic man (adult), was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The officer was uninjured. A large knife was recovered at the scene.

East Willow St. was blocked for hours between California and Walnut Aves. for the joint LASD/SHPD investigation.

[LASD Sept 20 statement] -- The L.A. County Sheriff's Dept. is assisting SHPD in the investigation and issued the following statement

During the police response, an officer located an individual walking westbound on the north curb of Willow Street, matching the description of the suspect from the earlier stabbing.

As the officer attempted to detain the suspect, the suspect ignored his commands and continued to flee.

The officer then exited his vehicle, again attempting to detain the suspect.

The suspect produced a large knife and attacked the officer, at which time an officer-involved shooting occurred.

The suspect, a male Hispanic adult, was struck at least one time in the upper torso. He was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead.

The officer was not injured.

A large knife was recovered at the scene.

The stabbing victim at the grocery store, a male Black adult, suffered a stab wound to his upper torso and was transported to local hospital. The victim remains in fair condition.

The relationship between the suspect and stabbing victim, if any, is unknown.

The incident does not appear to be gang related...
