In October 2013, LBREPORT.com was first (again) among Long Beach outlets to report that five California Mayors (not including Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster) had filed paperwork launching a petition signature drive for the "Pension Reform Act of 2014," a statewide measure that would let government agencies negotiate changes to current employees' pension and healthcare benefits, not changing benefits already earned but letting agencies negotiate changes applicable to future years of service. The measure would change the CA constitution to eliminate the "vested rights" principle that now blocks government bodies from negotiating reduced pension benefits (coverage here) Within days, as reported by LBREPORT.com, the Los Angeles County Democratic Party blasted the proposed measure (coverage here). LBREPORT.com has since learned that some Long Beach city employee unions have asked candidates in the 2014 Long Beach city election cycle if they support or oppose the statewide pension ballot measure. For these unions, defeating the measure will presumably be a factor in whom their PACs support or oppose in the upcoming Long Beach election cycle. To access it, click the link below.
Among the comments visible are those of Steve Maviglio of Sacramento, who operates Forza Communications (a Sac'to based public relations/campaign firm) who was formerly Deputy Chief of Staff to Assembly Speakers Karen Bass and Fabian Nunez and press secretary/acting communications director to CA Governor Gray Davis. On Jan. 2, Fox and Hounds also published a piece by Mr. Maviglio critical of the proposed ballot measure:
LBREPORT.com welcomes your views...and we're interested to know if the position of a candidate for Long Beach Mayor or City Council on this measure would affect your vote for him or her, and if so, in what direction? Would knowing that a public employee union had endorsed a candidate for Mayor or Council, based in part on their position on this measure, affect your vote one way or the other, and if so in what direction? Developing...with further to follow on LBREPORT.com.
