(Jan. 24, 2015) -- LBREPORT.com is saddened to report the recent passing of Long Beach's own Octavio Orduño at age 106 (nearly 107.) Mr. Orduño was widely believed to be the world's oldest cyclist, bicycling daily for roughly forty years and continuing to pedal an adult tricycle for the past six years.

LBREPORT.com was present on April 23, 2011 when Mr. Orduño's (then 103) was invited to join local officials as they unveiled separated bike lanes along Broadway/Alamitos/Third St/Golden downtown (then a "one year pilot project," now part of the city's long term mobility plan.)

Invited to say a few words by the City's then-Mobility Coordinator Charles Gandy, Mr. Orduño remarked, "Where's all the beautiful women?" Cyclists traveled a loop from the Promenade: east on Broadway, north on Alamitos, west on Third, south on Golden. Mr. Orduño was first to complete the loop, ahead of officialdom.

Mr. Orduño's 104th birthday (March 14) was marked by a ride alongside Mr. Gandy (who now handles bicycle and pedestrian projects for a number of cities.) Mr. Gandy thoughtfully preserved video (below) of the occasion.

LBREPORT.com spoke today (Jan. 24) with Mr. Orduño's daughter, Angelina, who shared a number of aspects of Mr. Orduño's remarkable life with us. To hear daughter Angelina Orduño's words, click here.

Commenting for LBREPORT.com on Mr. Orduño's passing, Mr. Gandy said Mr. Orduño was "an inspiration to me and to people like him after he turned 100. He had a great sense of humor, loved getting outside and showing young people how vibrant he was. He was a genuine advocate for eating healthy. He was a vegetarian and very disciplined about his diet. He ate beans, rice, bananas, cauliflower...and Cheerios."
