(April 26, 2016, 10:05 p.m.) -- A decorated USAF combat veteran of the Afghanistan war, Ret. Staff Sgt. Sean Harvell, a LB native who attended Millikan High, was discovered deceased in the waters off Alamitos Beach (area S. 9th Pl/E. Ocean Blvd.) shortly before 1 a.m. today (April 26). He was 33 years old.
A little over four and a half years ago, his younger brother Andrew, also a Millikan High grad, was among a helicopter crew shot down/perished in the worst single loss of U.S. forces in the Afghan war. SSgt Sean Harvell was awarded two Silver Stars (third highest award for valor) for actions detailed at www.sgtmacsbar.com. SSgt. Harvell, who was retired at the time of his death, was featured in a 2014 USAF recruiting video (below):
SSgt. Harvell's younger brother, Staff Sgt. Andrew Harvell, was among thirty U.S. servicemembers (including a team of Navy SEALS) who perished on August 6, 2011 when their helicopter was shot down over Afghanistan.
In another local link, Lt. Cmdr. Jonas Kelsall, the son of the then-Pres/CEO of the Greater Lakewood Chamber of Commerce, was among the Navy SEALS aboard the downed helicopter who perished in the Aug. 2011 attack. An investigation into the death of SSgt. Sean Harvell will take place and we'll update this story as we learn more.
