(April 22, 2017, 5:35 p.m., updated 6:45 p.m.) -- A Long Beach "March for Science" drew an estimated 500+ people spanning several generations on Saturday morning April 22. The marchers gathered at San Antonio Rd./Atlantic Ave. in Bixby Knolls and traveled up Atlantic to Houghton Park in NLB. The LB event was one of over 500 "March for Science" events nationally (including one on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.), timed to coincide with Earth Day. [Update: Co-organizer (and LBUSD School Board member) Megan Kerr says on her Facebook page that a co-organizer says 1,014 people marched.]

Earlier today (April 22), President Trump tweeted two messages regarding "Earth Day," the first at about 2 p.m. Eastern time: "Today on Earth Day, we celebrate our beautiful forests, lakes and land. We stand committed to preserving the natural beauty of our nation." About three hours later, the President added, "I am committed to keeping our air and water clean but always remember that economic growth enhances environmental protection. Jobs matter!" In November 2012, citizen Trump tweeted that "The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive."..but during the Presidential campaign said climate change exists but is "naturally occurring." Once in the White House, President Trump signed an Executive Order in late March 2017 reversing policies he called the federal government's "overreach" and ending what he called the "war on coal." The action alarmed a number of scientists who say scientific data supports the conclusion that green house gas emissions are tipping the planet toward irreversible global warming and climate change...the latter with sea level rise (obviously relevant to Long Beach.)
[Amnesia File] In August 2014, the Long Beach City Council voted without dissent (9-0), with Mayor Garcia presiding, to overrule an appeal by environmental groups (including NRDC and others) that let the Port of Long Beach use a 1992 Environmental Impact Report (instead of preparing an updated EIR applying updated information and standards) as the basis for renewing a lengthy contract with a long-time exporter of coal and bulk petroleum coke at the Port of Long Beach. (The operation also involves the use of uncovered rail cars carrying these materials through parts of Long Beach.) Records recently reviewed by LBREPORT.com show that in the latter half of 2016, the coal/coke exporting firm contributed sums to the "officeholder accounts" of a number of LB City Council incumbents, including some of those seeking reelection in the 2018 election cycle. Based on reports from those taking part, and our review of the video and photos, we updated estimated number of participants to 500+.
