(Aug. 1, 2011, 4:05 p.m.) -- Less than 24 hours before releasing City Management's proposed FY12 City Hall budget accompanied by his recommendations to the City Council and the public, Mayor Bob Foster's office released a "joint statement" with LB Police Officers Association President Lt. Steve James on "an agreement in principle on a new contact." (full text below):
We are pleased to announce an agreement in principle for a new contract delivering meaningful long-term savings and significant pension reform to the City that recognizes the existing commitment to LBPOA membership. The current City Hall-LBPOA contract is a five year agreement signed in 2009...which isn't scheduled to expire until September 2014. LBReport.com asked LBPOA President James why there'd be a new contract with over three years remaining on the current one. Lt. James replied that he wasn't at liberty to discuss details with us until he'd an opportunity to share details with his Association's membership, but said that the new agreement "is the right thing to do." So how does the new agreement in principle change the deal POA has now with the City? "It has a significant impact on the deal we already had," Lt. James replied. In what way? "The POA has come forward with concessions to the City." What type of concessions? "They're significant." But what kind of concessions are they? "There's a POA Board meeting scheduled tomorrow (Aug. 2) to set a timeline for presenting information to members," Lt. James said, declining to share details until members heard them first. How long will the new contract be? Lt. James likewise declined to say until members heard details first. Further as we learn it on LBReport.com
