KFWB All News/Newstalk 980 Kaput, Will Flip To All Sports; Flashback To June 2011: See LBREPORT.com's Supernaw & Mello On-Air When Station Spent A Day in Long Beach


(Aug. 23, 2014) -- LBREPORT.com contributors Daryl Supernaw and Joe Mello can now claim a small part of Los Angeles radio history, having been among the voices propelled by the 5,000 watt now-former-all-news-formatted KFWB radio (980 AM) which switches to all sports in the coming days.

On June 24, 2011, KFWB spotlighted Long Beach, broadcasting live for much of the day from Legends in Belmont Shore and the station invited LBREPORT.com's Supernaw and Mello to discuss Long Beach issues in two separate segments. They did a splendid job and got good reviews from station staff.

KFWB's morning team of Penny Griego and Phil Hulett dexterously handled the fast-paced morning drive hours (5-9 a.m.) with guests including Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster, community omnipresence Justin Rudd (charmed Ms. Griego in discussing Rosie's Dog Beach)...and LBReport.com Community Correspondent Daryl Supernaw (photo below).

The news team asked Mr. Supernaw to describe two recent LBReport.com stories: possible expansion of the 710 freeway in Long Beach to 14 lanes (conceptual images first reported on LBReport.com) and the current non-operation of LB's photo red/automated ticket cameras (also reported first on LBReport.com)

The station's afternoon drive team of Michael Shapee and Maggie McKay led off their 4 p.m. hour with LBReport.com Community Correspondent Joe Mello (photo below).


Mr. Mello noted that LB is now home to a large LGBT community (LB's annual Pride parade is the city's second largest annual event). He also discussed a proposal by Councilman Robert Garcia to name a downtown plaza for assassinated SF Supervisor Harvey Milk which prompted grassroots Long Beach Facebook and email responses (at one point including LB First Lady Nancy Foster) that suggested the area be named for Long Beach local (Poly High grad) Billie Jean King and (suggested by Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske) other Long Beach LGBT pioneers. ..Mr. Mello also discussed the recent action by a City Council majority in enacting an ordinance that (effective August 1) will forbid most LB grocery stores from offering customers plastic bags...
